Why Biophilic Design Matters for Healing
In the world of holistic living, everything in your environment carries energy. What you surround yourself with shapes not only how your home looks, but how it feels.
My own journey into biophilic design was shaped by a study that left a lasting impression on me: “View Through a Window May Influence Recovery from Surgery” by Robert S. Ulrich:
Conducted between 1972 and 1981, the study observed 46 patients recovering from the same surgical procedure in the same hospital. Half of the patients had windows overlooking nature, while the other half faced a brick wall. The results were profound, those with natural views had shorter hospital stays, needed less pain medication, and were evaluated more positively by staff.
That study stayed with me and it came full circle on July 22, 2025, the day I underwent knee replacement surgery. As I was wheeled down the hospital hallway toward my room, Ulrich’s findings echoed in my mind. I passed rooms with views of rooftops and brick walls, and all I could think of was – Please, give me a room with a view.
As luck would have it, my room at the end of the hallway had a stunning view of trees and sky. For someone like me who craves the outdoors, it was a true blessing. Even during just one night in the hospital, that view made a difference. I remember the way the evergreens stood tall against the sky, how the light shifted through the evening, and how the morning sun gently framed my mood the next day. Even a passing rainstorm brought peace, watching droplets trail down the window. The nursing staff even commented on how positive my energy was, and how much they’d miss me.
Now home and a few weeks into recovery, I can say without hesitation that biophilic design is helping me heal. My recovery room at home has two large windows with views of our yard. Morning sunlight streams in, and with the windows open I can hear birdsong, the bubbling of our garden pond, and the chime of the wind bells. These sensory experiences ground me, uplift me, and ease the discomfort of healing.
And it doesn’t stop there. I can step out onto our deck, my personal sanctuary, where I’m immersed in the textures, colors, and rhythms of nature. Even when the exercises get hard, the connection to nature soothes the struggle. This experience has reaffirmed everything I believe in as a designer that healing isn’t just clinical, its environmental, emotional, and spiritual.
Biophilic design connects us to the rhythms and beauty of the natural world, even when we’re indoors. Studies have shown that access to natural elements like sunlight, greenery, and fresh air can:
- Lower stress and blood pressure
- Speed up recovery time
- Improve mood and sleep quality
- Reduce the need for pain medication
In short: nature helps us heal. And when your body is in recovery, your environment becomes part of your treatment plan.

What a Healing-Centered Space Looks Like
I’d also like to add the importance of artwork in your healing space. In my own recovery room, I’m surrounded by artwork created by my mother and sister, both of whom are no longer here. Their art, and all the love and energy it carries, brings me daily joy and emotional support. It’s a deeply personal reminder that healing also involves the heart and spirit. When thoughtfully chosen, artwork can be more than decorative, it can be grounding, comforting, and even sacred.
When I design for recovery, I look at more than aesthetics. I consider how the space feels, physically, emotionally, and energetically. A healing space should feel calm, gentle, and life-affirming.
Here are a few ways we integrate biophilic design into post-surgical spaces:
- Light-Filled Comfort: Ample natural light supports the body’s circadian rhythms and lifts the spirit. We soften glare with sheer fabrics or adjustable shades and place recovery seating near windows whenever possible.
- Nature-Inspired Materials: Wood, stone, linen, and wool bring warmth and grounding energy to a space. These tactile surfaces invite relaxation and sensory ease.
- Plants with Purpose: Living greenery doesn’t just look good, it purifies the air and offers a gentle connection to life. We select low-maintenance, non-toxic plants that are easy to care for or can be managed by a caregiver.
- Serene Color Palettes: Earth tones, soft greens, and calming blues mimic the natural world and encourage rest. We tailor palettes to each client’s preferences, honoring both the emotional and energetic needs of healing.
- Thoughtful Flow: A clear, intuitive layout ensures ease of movement. For those with limited mobility, we eliminate clutter, select appropriately scaled furnishings, and ensure accessibility without sacrificing beauty.

Stepping Outside – The Power of Outdoor Sanctuaries
Healing doesn’t have to happen solely indoors. In fact, stepping outside, even briefly, can accelerate recovery by engaging the senses, regulating mood, and offering a deeper connection to life beyond pain or discomfort.
Creating an outdoor sanctuary, whether it’s a small patio, balcony, garden path, or shaded porch, invites fresh air, natural light, and gentle movement into the healing process. These spaces become a refuge for reflection, meditation, and simply being.
At Fusion Designed, we consider how your interior flows into your exterior spaces, ensuring harmony between the two. A comfortable chair in the sun, a soothing fountain, or fragrant herbs in a container garden can all become part of your recovery ritual, simple elements that uplift the spirit and reconnect you with the living world.

Healing is Personal—So Is Your Space
Every client’s recovery journey is unique. That’s why our approach to design is deeply personal. We listen carefully to your needs, preferences, and wellness goals. Whether you need a quiet bedroom sanctuary, a serene bathroom retreat, or a sun-filled reading nook to rest and restore, we co-create spaces that truly support your mind, body, and spirit.
Because healing doesn’t happen in sterile rooms. It happens where you feel safe, seen, and connected.
And that’s what biophilic design is all about.

OM Takeaway
Healing isn’t just about rest, it’s about restoration.
When we immerse ourselves in nature both indoors and out, we invite the body to slow down, the mind to soften, and the spirit to feel held. Whether through sunlight on your skin or the rhythm of leaves outside your window, biophilic design reminds us: healing is supported by the spaces that surround us.
